… and Why I Don’t Believe in Them
There has been a lot of information and things written about 2016 being the end of a cycle of 9 years and 2017 the beginning of another cycle. In a way, this makes 2017 a bit special. So New Year’s resolutions should be packing a punch shouldn’t they?
I have been thinking about the resolutions as like every year I have people asking me about mine.
Now there used to be a time when I would religiously write my list ready for the new year. On my list were things like getting fit, getting slimmer, get a better job, attend a workshop/course, have more money, get a new car and so on …. I don’t really remember growing up and putting on my list something like “be kinder” or “believe in myself more”. It always used to be mostly about material things. Needless to say, most of the time my resolutions – like going to the gym 3 times a week – would be forgotten by the end of January.
Why are some of us not able to hang on and go through with our New Year’s resolutions?
I have always asked myself how can other people do that and what’s the secret.
I think the secret is in putting down things you are ready for. Things that you have been thinking about for a while and you are ready to make them happen. Things that push you out of your comfort zone but you have been working towards them.
Many resolutions are about changing and getting ourselves in a better space like getting fitter, drinking less alcohol, eat healthy etc.
Change does not happen overnight. It is a long process in which everything happens slowly and steadily … if you want the change to last. You can get triggered by events, situations and/or people to want to change but ultimately if you are not ready for it, it will be a struggle and will not last.
Sit down and have a think about the life you want to have in 2017.
How do you see your ideal life?
How can you improve your health, education or anything else you want to?
Why kind of work would make your heart sing?
What kind of people would you like in your life?
Would you welcome more joy into your life?
Instead of making a list with resolutions look at all your answers and set the intention to make it happen … one baby step at the time.
A resolution is a firm decision to do or not do something. So setting an intention, a plan, an aim will allow much needed flexibility. Life is ever changing and we need to adapt and keep in the flow of it.
And if you missed the deadline of New Year’s Day don’t worry. Any day is perfectly acceptable for setting intentions to improve our life. Just start somewhere and you can build the rest.
My intention for 2020 is to make it even better than 2019 on a personal level and on a business level.
Wishing you a year full of joy, laughter, kindness, love and blessings.
